1929 National Currency 20 Dollar Note - Choice of Grade - New York (B) Bank Issue - 1929 B Twenty Dollar Federal Reserve Bank - Fr#1870-B

This listing is for one of the photographed 1929 US 20 Dollar Brown Seal National Currency Note. Issued by the Federal Reserve Bank in New York, B Issue. Choice of grade/condition. Fr#1870-B (Friedburg Number 1870-B).

With the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, the Federal Reserve System was established, aiming to create a more stable and flexible monetary system in the United States. In 1915 Federal Reserve Bank Notes (FRBNs) were introduced to complement existing forms of currency, such as US notes and National Bank Notes. FRBNs were issued by the individual Federal Reserve Banks rather than the Federal Reserve System as a whole, backed by the government securities held by each individual bank. The notes resembled the National Bank Notes but featured the issuing Federal Reserve Bank's name and a distinctive brown seal. They were primarily used to supplement currency in circulation, especially in times of high demand. They were issued during the Great Depression to address currency shortages following the banking crisis of 1933. By the mid-1930s, FRBNs were largely replaced by Federal Reserve Notes, which were more standardized and backed by the entire Federal Reserve System. Very interesting piece of history!
